La Crescenta is a census-designated place and is technically an unincorporated area in Los Angeles County. It encompasses the parts of the Crescenta Valley that are not in the cities of Glendale or La Cañada Flintridge. However, both the unincorporated area and the part of incorporated Glendale that lies north of Montrose are called together La Crescenta. The Foothill Freeway runs through the southern portion of the area. It is bordered on the north by the Angeles National Forest, on the east by La Cañada Flintridge, on the south by Glendale, and the northwest by Tujunga. The population was 20,139 at the time of the 2010 U.S. census. This was up from 18,463 at the recording of the 2000 census. The 2010 also reported that La Crescenta has population density of roughly 5,800 people per square mile. The racial breakdown of La Crescenta is 66 percent Caucasian, 1 percent African-American, 0.5 percent Native American, 26 percent Asian, 0.3 percent Pacific Islander, 3 percent were from other races, and 4 percent were from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race made up 12 percent of the total population. The percentages of Asian and Caucasian people in La Crescenta is high for the county. The median income of $82,734 is also high for the county, The percentages of households that earned $60,000 to $125,000 and $125,000 and more were high for the region. 41 percent of residents 25 and older have four-year degrees, high for the county as well. The percentages of older residents, aged 35 to 49 and 50 to 64, were among the county's highest. The single-parent rate is only 9 percent, low for the county. The percentage of veterans who served in Vietnam in the area is also among the county's highest. Also according to the 2010 Census Bureau, the La Crescenta region measures about 3.5 square miles. The population is well distributed with 24 perent under the age of 18, 9 percent aged 18 to 24, 24 percent aged 25 to 44, 33 percent aged 45 to 64, and 13 percent people who were 65 years of age or older. The median age of the city is approximately 42 years of age. Schools in La Crescenta are a part of the Glendale Unified School District. La Crescenta is served by two local newspapers: the Glendale News Press and the Crescenta Valley Weekly.
